Danny Latza has resigned after two years as captain of Bundesliga relegated Schalke 04. This was announced by the Royal Blues on Sunday.
“This decision was not easy for me,” said Latza, who was born in Gelsenkirchen. Nevertheless, “it was about time to take this step,” explained the midfielder.
“I felt that this impulse would be good for the team. The coach and I always have a very good exchange, so after my personal decision I sought a conversation with Thomas (Reis; ed.) and told him that I make my office available,” said Latza.
The 33-year-old will “remain an important contact person for the players and me on and off the field, there is no doubt about that,” stressed Reis. The club wants to announce who will be the new captain “in due course”.
It was only on Thursday that the previous captain Marco Reus resigned from Schalke’s arch-rival Borussia Dortmund after five years.
