FC Schalke 04 is again in acute danger of relegation in the Bundesliga just a few months after the much-celebrated promotion. A former Royal Blues head coach sees a tough time ahead for his former club.
“It’s going to be incredibly difficult,” said Jens Keller at “sports1“about the Schalke situation in the relegation battle.
After the first twelve match days of the Bundesliga, the Knappen have just six points and are therefore at the bottom of the table.
Thomas Reis is supposed to protect the Gelsenkircheners from going into the second division again. However, the 2-0 defeat against SC Freiburg showed that the ex-Bochumer is facing an extremely complicated rescue mission.

“In the summer they didn’t have the financial means to put a powerful team on the pitch,” Keller said, naming Schalke’s dilemma. The Royal Blues continue to struggle with massive financial problems.
The room for maneuver is simply too small “to get the reinforcements they needed to play a good role in the league,” said the former S04 coach.

Reis has to make the turn at Schalke with the existing staff. “First you have to make the team understand the talent-free things, that the attitude, the mentality is right,” explained Keller: “Anyone can run and fight. You have to force something like that. He only has the options: video, speak, train. You don’t have many more options as a coach. You have to hope that you make the team.”
It won’t get any easier for FC Schalke 04. Until the World Cup break, the Revierklub still have games against Werder Bremen, 1. FSV Mainz 05 and FC Bayern on the program. One thing is certain: Schalke urgently need points.
