Felix Magath no longer trusts his ex-club FC Schalke 04 to return directly to the Bundesliga this season. According to the long-time Bundesliga coach, things are different at Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV.
“After the 3-4 home defeat against Rostock, I don’t think they can do it anymore,” Magath said “Image” about the situation at Schalke.
The Royal Blues parted ways with coach Dimitrios Grammozis after the bitter defeat against the basement child. Assistant coach Mike Büskens will take over the position as head coach on an interim basis.
The gap to third place is already six points with nine games to play.
Werder Bremen already “through” according to Felix Magath
Schalke’s co-relegated Werder Bremen is in a much better position. The Green-Whites have been unbeaten since the end of November, recently winning at competitor and arch-rival Hamburger SV (3-2) and Dynamo Dresden (2-1) and taking first place.
“Bremen took the decisive step towards the Bundesliga by winning the northern derby. They can’t take it anymore, they’re through,” said Magath.
The long-time Bundesliga coach does not believe that the pursuers Darmstadt 98 and FC St. Pauli, who are both only one point behind Werder, can catch up. “I don’t find either of them that convincing,” judged Magath.
“There are still chances for HSV”
In the opinion of the 68-year-old, it is not impossible that his heart club HSV will finally make it back to the top flight at the fourth attempt – even though the red trousers, like Schalke, are already six points away from the relegation place.
“The deficit must be made up in any case. HSV still have chances. Together with Werder, they have the best squad. That must now pay off in victories,” said Magath, who played for Hamburg from 1976 to 1986 later worked there as a manager and trainer.
