FC Schalke 04 | Ex-S04 star landed in Denmark: “Perfect place for me”

Max Meyer was once considered one of the most promising talents in German football, playing for the German championship and in the Champions League with FC Schalke. Not much is left of the splendor of the career start around nine years ago. After leaving Gelsenkirchen in August 2018, Meyer is now starting his fourth club post.

The 26-year-old lasted only half a season at top Turkish club Fenerbahce. Meyer did not find his way in the team around ex-world champion Mesut Özil in the first half of the season and was only in the starting eleven for the Istanbul team three times.

He had previously had similar difficulties at Crystal Palace in England and when he was loaned to 1. FC Köln last season, when he was also mainly used as a noble joker.

Now the 2016 Olympic champion is hoping to finally get his footballing career back on track with FC Midtjylland.

At his introduction on the homepage of the Danish top club, Meyer was euphoric: “After a few good talks with those responsible, I had no doubts that this was the perfect place for me”.

The native of Oberhausen has no further settling-in period in Istanbul, where he still has a contract until the summer of 2023. He is on loan at FC Midtjylland until the end of the current season.

Meyer played over 140 Bundesliga games for FC Schalke

“It’s an ambitious club that doesn’t hide the fact that the goal is to win the title and that excites me a lot,” added Meyer. The Danish Superligaen ranks 17th in the UEFA five-year ranking behind the elite leagues of Cyprus and the Czech Republic – that is also part of the truth and classification of the Meyer loan.

The midfielder, who was once predicted to be world-class by agent Roger Wittmann, is making his next attempt to gain a foothold at a new club and to rediscover the qualities that made him so strong in over 140 Bundesliga games for FC Schalke .

After all, Max Meyer still plays internationally with the top Danish club, playing against PAOK Saloniki in the Conference League playoffs on February 17th and 24th. After that, there could also be a reunion with Fenerbahce, who are also starting in the Conference League.
