In its “sports1“-Column ex-national player Stefan Effenberg commented on the situation at FC Schalke 04 and on the discussion surrounding the public criticism of BVB professional Mats Hummels. The former professional also raved about an FC Bayern duo.
The 2-1 defeat at Hertha BSC and VfL Bochum’s victory over leaders Union Berlin (2-1) pushed FC Schalke 04 to the bottom of the Bundesliga table.
Stefan Effenberg doesn’t want to write off the Royal Blues yet, but still believes that it will be difficult for the Revier club to stay in the class.
“Circumstances are still okay at Schalke, but that can quickly go to extremes,” warned the former Bayern professional and looked back: “It escalated in the 2020/21 relegation season, the scenes of hunting players are still in our heads. “
For the Royal Blues, the whole situation is “incredibly difficult due to the pressure that a traditional club always automatically has. For Schalke this season it will be a fight to the end and the club is currently going to be relegated again,” said Effenberg.
Süle with the goal of the month?
Effenberg, on the other hand, found words of praise for Borussia Dortmund. “BVB hasn’t burned off that much of a spectacle so far,” he wrote, referring to the 5-0 win over VfB Stuttgart.
The 54-year-old was particularly impressed by a BVB professional. “You don’t often see Niklas Süle as an assist – and then he almost contributed a goal of the month with his goal at the BVB gala against VfB Stuttgart,” enthused Effenberg.
The 2001 Champions League winner “doesn’t want to put the public criticism of Mats Hummels on the gold scales”. Hummels is a leader and has the right to “address things clearly. He’s also very self-critical,” Effenberg clarified.
Musiala’s creativity ‘incredible’
Effenberg also gushed about Jamal Musiala and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in his column. “Musiala’s creativity is unbelievable,” he praised the Bayern youngster, adding: “He makes a positive impression off the field too. His interviews after the games are funny and he gets to the point.”
Choupo-Moting is also “perfect in character” and always offers himself in training. “Now that one or the other player is rested, you pay him back with stakes,” said Effenberg.
