The Swiss Football League (SFL) has opened disciplinary proceedings against German goalkeeper Marius Müller.
The background is a homophobic statement by Müller after the defeat of his club, FC Luzern, against FC St. Gallen on August 13th. In a television interview, Müller then made disparaging remarks about his team’s defenders, who turned away instead of going into the ball. He used the word “gay” derogatory. The sentences had sparked outrage on social media.
“The disciplinary judge in the game operations of the Swiss Football League opened proceedings against the goalkeeper of FC Luzern, Marius Müller, based on the statements in a TV interview after the defeat against FC St. Gallen (4: 1),” said the league. “Until the publication of a possible verdict, no further information will be disclosed.”
FC Luzern apologized on Twitter for the behavior of its goalkeeper. His statement corresponds neither to the values lived by the club nor by its fans, he said. Müller himself joined his club’s apology on Instagram. The statement was stupid and completely misplaced.
