FC Groningen separates from coach Wormuth: “Big misjudgment”

After 14 games

Frank Wormuth is no longer the coach of FC Groningen. As the Eredivisie club announced on Monday, the club’s management had come to the conclusion that there was no longer enough support for the 62-year-old to stay. This “drastic measure” is “deeply regretted”, but this decision should have been made in the interests of FC Groningen.

Born in Berlin, he had only looked after the Dutchman since the start of the season, but he only scored an average of 1.07 points from 14 games, putting the club in 15th place in the table, just before the relegation zone. Overall, it was Wormuth’s eighth head coaching position, having previously spent four years on the sidelines at Heracles Almelo.

Technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus, who already knew Wormuth from previous clubs, said: “Last winter we chose Frank as the new head coach of FC Groningen with full conviction. As it turns out now, this was a big misjudgment, for which I, as Technical Director, blame myself. The last few months have shown that things didn’t fit here at and with FC Groningen. Frank’s approach has not caught on sufficiently. We feel that he failed to give enough support to his staff and the player group and to convey his ideas.”
