FOOTBALL – Mark-Jan Fledderus from Coevorden has been fired as technical director of FC Groningen. He succeeded Ron Jans in this position in 2019, but due to disappointing results at the Groningen team, it has been decided today that the club and Fledderus will separate. The Pride of the North is at the bottom of the Eredivisie.
Fledderus, who played in the youth of FC Emmen, has been criticized in recent months, partly because of his purchasing policy, statements in the media and dealing with staff. The players he brought in the last transfer window were not enough to keep the club’s confidence.
Fledderus himself says it is a pity that the collaboration ends. “Everything I’ve done at the club has been for one purpose only: serving the interests of FC Groningen.” The club, for which he also played as a footballer, continues to hold a special place for the Coevorder. “I sincerely wish everything and everyone at the club the very best for the future.”
“We are constantly talking to each other to see what is and what is not going well,” says general manager Wouter Gudde. “For us, the conclusion was that there is insufficient confidence and perspective to continue the collaboration.
