After the 4-1 win at FC Den Bosch on Monday, FC Groningen also won the home match against MVV convincingly: 3-0.
Was it the eleventh home game in a row that FC Groningen remained undefeated? Was it the night of the third period? Would the FC end up equal in terms of number of losing points with Roda JC, which is in the coveted second place?
To trust
These were just a few reflections before the match that the Groningen camp was looking forward to with confidence. Completely justified given the still growing form, the great calling card that Lukkien and his men presented in De Kuip and the clear 4-1 win at FC Den Bosch that followed that semi-final against Feyenoord.
Rui Mendes, who played such an important role in Den Bosch with two goals, had to start on the bench again. Also an understandable choice by Lukkien, who does not want to unnecessarily fiddle with his basic team, which is starting to get along better with each passing week.
Not much to achieve for number 12
To underline this once again, FC Groningen made it clear in the early stages that there was little to be achieved in Euroborg on this evening for the Limburgers, who had traveled without supporters and were 12th.
Yet the very first skirmishes were for MVV, but two Groningen inattentions were not punished in the first minutes. After that, the game quickly turned in Groningen’s favor.
Main role for goalkeeper Jurjus
Remarkably enough, goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus played a leading role. He launched the Groningen attack after just over seven minutes. His long kick put Thom van Bergen in a shooting position. His effort was blocked by Wout Coomans, Romano Postema’s rebound was defended by Ozgur Aktas.
Less than four minutes later it was scored and Jurjus was at the starting line-up again. His kick bounced just right for Postema, who was alert and saw Coomans’ kick completely wrong. The bearded striker from the FC then shot in well with the left: 1-0. With that goal, Jurjus received his first assist of the season.
Schreuders is close to 2-0
From that moment on it was clear that only one team was going to win in Euroborg: FC Groningen. Schreuders, who again played well, had the 2-0 close moments later. After a through ball from Luciano Valente, the energetic right midfielder shot into goalkeeper Matthys.
If that shouldn’t have been 2-0, Postema’s subsequent chance certainly should have been. Once again the Stadjer came one on one with Matthys, now he also cleverly passed the Limburger and seemed unable to figure out his shot, but Aktas prevented the 2-0 with a miraculous dive: he took the ball off the line with his head.
Beautiful goal: 2-0
Yet three minutes later it was a hit. And it was a beautiful goal. Set up by Van Bergen, who passed on the left to Määttä, who passed back to Schreuders, who passed flawlessly under Matthys: 2-0.
Trainer Maurice Verberne intervened by immediately taking Coomans, who also had a yellow card, to the side.
Goldcrests finish it off
In the second half of the same sheet a suit. MVV lacked quality, FC Groningen continued to attack energetically and Lukkien’s Groningen goldcrests finished the job.
Määttä, who was good for the assist for the 2-0, was taken off at half-time by Lukkien, Thijmen Blokzijl replaced the Norwegian who had not been able to convince since he replaced the injured Wouter Prins.
Postema scores two more goals
Shortly after halftime, Postema ended the game. Valente made an excellent move after Van Bergen had been forced to the ground, saw Postema next to him and he cleverly shot his second goal via the post with his left foot: 3-0. This brings his season total to 11 goals.
The third period could not yet be celebrated in Euroborg because FC Dordrecht won against Telstar. That party will have to be postponed for a while. But a period is not what FC Groningen is going for this season and in this form.
