FOOTBALL – Drenthe had to wait 37 years for it, but FC Emmen’s first championship as a professional club has finally arrived. The team of trainer Dick Lukkien did not even have to win.
In fact, FC Emmen lost 1-0 at FC Eindhoven. But due to the defeat of the only remaining competitor FC Volendam at FC Dordrecht (3-2) Emmen can no longer be overtaken as the leader in the Kitchen Champion Division in the last game of the season.
FC Emmen soon fell behind with a goal from wing striker Jasper Dahlhaus. Within two minutes he shot the ball hard behind Michael Brouwer, after he was not put in the way by the Drentse defense. Not long afterwards, Reda Kharchouch had to equalize after a wonderful pass by Keziah Veendorp. The striker, who is currently not in excellent form, however, shot the ball straight at Nigel Bertrams in free position.
Left back Lorenzo Burnet had just finished his last sip of tea when he was given a life-size chance. The ball wide from Lucas Bernadou was fine, but Burnet pushed a meter wide. Flat tried again from a distance, but aimed too high.
Those were the feats of arms in this FC Emmen championship game, which was lost, but despite that, the Drenthe club has won the coveted title in the Kitchen Champion Division. The loss tonight in Eindhoven will not affect the taste of the Drenthe beer on the return journey. FC Emmen writes history. FC Emmen is CHAMPION!
