FOOTBALL – The loyal and enthusiastic audience in De Oude Meerdijk had to wait a long time for any entertainment, but was richly rewarded in the second half. FC Emmen closed the promotion year in style by winning 3-0 against ADO Den Haag. It earned the champion the third prize of the season: the fourth period title.
Lorenzo Burnet with a nice marker, Rui Mendes with his fifteenth goal of the season and substitute Metehan Güçlü provide the goals and joy in the FC Emmen stadium.
FC Emmen, which kept the zero for the 17th time, closes the season with 83 points from 38 games. This left the Drenthe club number two, FC Volendam, eight points ahead.
Prior to the game, Rui Mendes and Dick Lukkien were awarded a bronze shield as the best player and trainer of the fourth period respectively, after which the game started well for FC Emmen. The home club put the failed ADO Den Haag (which opted for players from the second squad in the run-up to the play-offs) with its back against the wall.
The problem, however, was that Emmen hardly forced any chances. In fact, as the first half progressed, the visitors even had the best chances. But as so often, Brouwer showed that he was the most reliable goalkeeper of the Kitchen Champion Division this season, who was rightly awarded the Tonny van Leeuwen trophy as the least passed goalkeeper in professional football.
After the break FC Emmen played up a gear and had to wait for the 1-0. That fell after Rui Mendes and Metehan Güçlü already missed three chances. Lorenzo Burnet was the creator. The left back did that very subtly with a marker. Shortly afterwards, Rui Mendes completed an assist from Azzeddine Toufiqui: 2-0. The final chord, in terms of goals, was for Güçlü who decisively shot in a wonderful attack via Veendorp and substitute Ben Scholte.
Then we had to wait for the final whistle and the umpteenth party of this season. And it was once again a premier league worthy party.
