Bayern talent has been playing for DFB since 2017
Under-21 national player Malik Tillman (19) has confirmed that the US association has asked him. “It’s true that they got in touch with me,” said FC Bayern’s midfield talent on Monday at a press conference with the DFB youth team.
Since his father is from the United States, the native of Nuremberg is also eligible to play for the United States and has already used this opportunity in the past. Tillman has made two appearances for the U15s. However, he then switched to the DFB, where he has played through all youth teams since 2017. The right-footed player, who has played three times for the U21s so far and scored three goals and one assist, wants to continue on this path. “It’s not for nothing that I’m here with the U21s. I feel comfortable here and will continue to do so,” said Tillman.
Coach Antonio Di Salvo also assumes that he will continue to work with Tillman. “I had a few conversations with him. What he told me is that he wants to play for Germany and that he identifies with us. He wants to gain a foothold in the club and the U21s and that’s what counts,” Di Salvo said last week.
Tillman one of 12 dual nationality players in the U21 squad
Tillman is one of 12 players with dual nationality in the 42-year-old’s current squad. The most recent example of a change of federation, but only after his career with the U21s, is Salih Özcan (24). The 1. FC Köln midfielder decided last Friday against the German national team and for the Turkish national team, where he meets his former coach with the German juniors, Stefan Kuntz. With him he won the U21 European Championship in 2021 (to the news).
