FC Bayern: Yann Sommer on the turbulent start and Neuer comparison

winter access

Newcomer Yann Sommer gave an insight into the eventful first few weeks since moving to FC Bayern and took stock. “In the early stages, there were things in the build-up that weren’t perfect. But that works very well now. Basically I’m satisfied, but I always want to improve. I want to be a top goalkeeper for Bayern Munich,” the Swiss told Kicker.

Sommer had switched from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Munich for 8 million euros shortly before the end of the winter break because the German record champions had an unexpected need after Manuel Neuer was injured.

“The medical tests ran into the night, the next day was the final training session, the signing of the contract, getting to know the team and the flight to Leipzig. And then a great game. I concentrated on football,” said the 34-year-old, looking back on the turbulent first few days on Säbener Straße. Sommer is “not worried at the moment” about a possible comeback by Neuer, who broke his lower leg while skiing after the World Cup in Qatar and wants to be back in goal for FC Bayern for the new season.

But he is in regular contact with the national goalkeeper: “We see each other almost every day and have very good contact. We knew each other before, we often played against each other.” When asked whether the comparisons with Neuer would annoy him, the Swiss said: “I don’t really get it. Every goalkeeper has their own style and character. In Basel, Franco Costanzo was ahead of me in goal, with Borussia Marc-André ter Stegen, who was very popular. As Yann Sommer, I want to be a good goalkeeper with my style for my new club.”

At the end of his move in winter, Sommer revealed that “at first he only read about Manuel’s injury” and thought “how bad it is for him. Later, my advisor informed me that I would be contacted.” At this point, Sommer was “clear that I would like to do that.” However, he had not previously categorically ruled out an extension of his expiring contract in Mönchengladbach: “I was very open to extend at Borussia. Why? Because I played there for eight and a half years and always received extreme support. I had great years there, we had very open discussions internally, we could look into each other’s eyes. I really appreciated that.”
