FC Bayern: Uli Hoeneß “a problem”

Ex-coach Felix Magath sees potential for conflict at Bayern because of the role of Honorary President Uli Hoeneß.

“Manchester United have the same problem as Bayern: One man has led the club for many decades and made it great, so he will always be the contact person for many in the club. That’s why he still has a say in what happens there even after he leaves, just no longer officially,” said Magath on the talk show “Sky 90” with regard to legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson.

Hoeneß had “managed Bayern Munich for more than 30 years, he will always have a great influence,” added the 58-year-old.

FC Bayern: That is the “problem” for Hasan Salihamidzic

Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic “has a problem with that because he can never decide everything on his own. He has to discuss things with Hoeneß beforehand when it comes to contracts like Robert Lewandowski or Manuel Neuer,” said Magath, who played for Bayern between 2004 and 2004 2007, but was released early after two doubles in a row.

According to Magath, Hoeneß’ continued importance behind the scenes also influences the work of the new club boss Oliver Kahn.

“I don’t know what the relationship between Kahn and Hoeneß is like, but as CEO he took on a very difficult job,” said the long-time Bundesliga coach. “I don’t know if Kahn can swim free.”

“Unrest” and “no clear structure” at FC Bayern

There is “restlessness” and “no clear structure” at FC Bayern, criticized Magath.

Kahn took over the position of CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the summer. Hoeneß had already resigned as President and Chairman of the Supervisory Board in November 2019, with Herbert Hainer taking over both posts at the time. The long-standing success manager of the German record champions is still a simple member of the supervisory board.
