FC Bayern: Transfer from Harry Kane almost failed – Hoeneß reveals details

Bayern boss Hoeneß reveals details

According to Uli Hoeneß, the transfer of England’s star striker Harry Kane to FC Bayern almost failed at the last second. Accordingly, Tottenham boss Daniel Levy did not really behave correctly. “I didn’t think it was good that Levy went on holiday to Miami when his club’s most important player, the England captain, wanted to leave the club. This made the talks even more complicated,” said the honorary president of the German record champions in an interview with the “World on Sunday”.

Munich’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen often had to conduct the negotiations in the middle of the night. “When the transfer seemed to fail last night, I thought to myself: actually, handshake agreements should still apply,” said Hoeneß. The “Spurs” and Levy would have used an “old trick”. “When everything is clear – go one step further. At midnight we had a verbal agreement, but at 2:50 it was called into question again. That night it was again about a larger amount, ”reported Hoeneß. But then Dreesen said: “Not a penny more!”

Kane put the pressure on himself. “Harry said that morning: If we don’t have a solution by the evening, I’ll play for Tottenham on Sunday. And then it’s over, then I won’t sign a new contract with Tottenham and will go on a free transfer next year,” said Hoeneß.

Poker lasted six hours on the last day before Levy accepted “that we remain stubborn in this regard, and the plane that had been waiting for Harry in Stansted that morning could finally take off,” Hoeneß revealed. On August 11, Kane’s scheduled morning flight from London to Munich was delayed by several hours before the private plane took off in the early evening. FC Bayern then announced the transfer on August 12.

Hoeneß explains: Kane is guaranteed to cost Bayern less than 100 million

Hoeneß rejected the fact that Kane should cost 100 million euros plus bonus payments. “The actual amount of cash we are now guaranteed to pay is less than 100 million. But if we become German champions, for example, or win the Champions League, it can still go up,” explained the 71-year-old. Either way: The 30-year-old attacker became the most expensive purchase in Bundesliga history. “But we would have gone through with the transfer even if the sum had been 100 million euros.”

The club patron received a statement from the past that he would not consider a 100 million transfer from Bayern to be possible. “Four years ago I could not have imagined that we would spend so much money on a player. Not even a year ago,” admitted Hoeneß. “But in life you always have to be ready to reevaluate things. We have a season behind us with which we were absolutely not satisfied. A major reason was that we didn’t have a number nine.”

SGE striker Randal Kolo Muani, who could be drawn to Paris Saint-Germain by Deadline Day, has also been traded as an alternative to Kane in recent months. Hoeneß now indirectly confirmed his club’s interest in the French: “Randal Kolo Muani from Eintracht Frankfurt would have liked us as an alternative.”
