FC Bayern: Salihamidzic discussed Cristiano Ronaldo with Hoeneß

FC Bayern has to be creative

Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic continues to rely on the expertise of Uli Hoeneß in the transfer business of Munich. “But we don’t just look at what Uli says. He has a right to be informed and asked. But we make the decision on the board,” said Salihamidzic in an interview with “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung“.

He talks a lot with the former manager and president of the record champions. “FC Bayern is his life’s work. It’s only sensible and right to take him with us,” Salihamidzic said. “We like to discuss. My opinion, his opinion. In the end we have the same goal: that FC Bayern is doing well.”

When it comes to transfers, the current President and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Herbert Hainer, is always the first to be informed, Salihamidzic explained. “Then he talks to Uli. Then I’ll talk to Uli,” added the 45-year-old. Hoeneß agrees with most of the decisions made by his successors. “I find him to be very relaxed. The way we want Uli. He shouldn’t even let go,” said Salihamidzic.

This summer, Cristiano Ronaldo (37) was also an issue between the two. The superstar reportedly wanted to leave Manchester United, but couldn’t find a buyer. “He wasn’t offered to us directly,” explained Salihamidzic. “I do, however, occasionally talk to Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes about the football market, and we did talk about Ronaldo once. I also discussed him with Uli. We have great respect for Cristiano Ronaldo – and yet we had other plans.”

The quarter-final defeat by FC Villarreal in the Champions League was not the reason why FC Bayern scratched their record expenditures of 137.5 million euros from 2019 (139.5 million euros) and ranked ninth in the international expenditure ranking stands. “We had a plan in place beforehand. Negotiations with Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui started even before the Villarreal games. We already had refinancing options in mind, all of which had been discussed with the Supervisory Board. Sometimes a plan works, sometimes not. A lot worked out in this summer of transfers – that’s why we did a lot. I always say: The transfer market is also a gamble,” said Salihamidzic.

In the two previous seasons, Salihamidzic had to act more cautiously on the transfer market and sometimes gambled away. “In the first phase of the pandemic, we didn’t have the financial means to do everything we wanted to do. We were missing far more than 100 million euros, ”explained the Bayern boss. “And not all the players we brought in performed the way they and we had imagined. The team was still very good. It wasn’t because of the quality of the squad that we were eliminated.”

Salihamidzic: FC Bayern have to be more creative than their competitors on the transfer market

In competition with externally financed top clubs, FC Bayern must continue to be more creative than its competitors. “By creativity, I mean above all that we have to try in different ways to convince players of FC Bayern. We have big competition in Europe, many clubs have a lot more money than us. We presented the players we wanted to sign what we had created over the past few years: a team of very high quality, with an age structure that is structured in such a way that we can win titles in the next three, four, five years.” , Salihamidzic gave insights. “And the players also chose us because they come to a team where they can be successful and get playing time. In the end we prevailed against clubs that offered more salary. We managed to ensure that the players didn’t just decide based on money.”

Summer 2022: Clubs with the highest transfer spends

In addition to the players, Salihamidzic always has to convince the FC Bayern supervisory board of his transfer ideas. He also succeeded in the cases of Matthijs de Ligt (23) and Sadio Mané (30), who together cost almost 100 million euros. “We showed the supervisory board that we can also earn more than 100 million euros. That convinces,” explained Salihamidzic. “We sold players and bought players. One thing was important to us: We didn’t want to do anything crazy.” Not in the future either. “In any case, there will probably not be as much movement in our squad in the next few years as there was this summer,” Salihamidzic hinted.
