Opinions differ about Leroy Sané – both at FC Bayern and in the German national team. National coach Julian Nagelsmann has experienced the offensive star in both environments and believes he knows how to tackle him.
The experts agree that Leroy Sané is playing his best season to date in the FC Bayern jersey. In 32 competitive games, the fast dribbler collected nine goals and twelve assists; only record purchaser Harry Kane was more effective.
Nevertheless, criticism of Sané has been loud again in the past few weeks. Since things have gone downhill in Munich, the 28-year-old has also lost his performance and recently even lost his regular place.
Julian Nagelsmann has experienced Sané’s ups and downs many times. In an interview with “Spiegel”, the DFB coach commented on the fickle attacker.
“Leroy is special. A great person with a fine character. But he has rough edges on the pitch,” said Nagelsmann about his protégé.
The national coach continued: “It makes it harder for him to deal with frustration, for example when a pass doesn’t arrive. But in a good team structure you can deal with things like that, and in the end everyone benefits from him. Because he has something special as a footballer and can decide games .”
At FC Bayern like at the DFB? “You won’t win anything with Sanés alone”
Nagelsmann made it clear that this type of player brings advantages and disadvantages for every team. “You won’t win anything with Leroy Sanés – but not without him either,” explained Hansi Flick’s successor.
He also revealed how you can motivate the noble technician. “You get Leroy Sané when you give him the prospect of a day off. Then he has his head free again and is fully focused on the matter,” revealed Nagelsmann.
At the home European Championship, Sané is hoping for a place in the first eleven, but to do so he has to be more consistent again. The former Schalke player has so far played 59 international matches for Germany (13 goals, seven assists).
