FC Bayern Munich: The De Ligt transfer is absurd

Would Matthijs de Ligt’s signing be a top transfer for Bayern?

Yes, that’s a huge thing for Bayern

The pro by Robert Hiersemann

He’s extremely good, has a big name, was one of the fan favorites at his previous clubs and really wants to move to Munich himself. Best conditions!

Matthjis de Ligt’s signing would not only be good, it would be outstanding. A big thing!

He has what it takes to be the Bayern defense chief, and that would have taken care of the record champions on the defensive for the next few years. The Dutchman is only 22 years old and still experienced. Already at the age of 17 he led the new top generation of Ajax Amsterdam in the Champions League as captain until he moved to Juventus Turin in Italy and was also a regular there for three years.

Another plus point: he’s strong in the air, scoring eight times in three years at Juve, five of them with a header, at Ajax seven times, with six of them with a header. And he almost always thinks offensively, which Bayern urgently needs. Only five percent of his passes were back passes last season.

With his commitment, Bayern would set an example after the bitter defensive departures in the last two years (Alaba and Süle). And that’s exactly what the club needs now.

No, this transfer is absurd

The contra of Florian Wichert

No question, de Ligt is a huge talent. Big, sure-footed, willing to take risks and only 22 years old.

But: This transfer has so many snags that it is more of a bad investment than a top transfer.

Why? Because de Ligt has certainly played a lot of good games – but also a lot of bad ones. After moving to Juventus, he had problems with the pressure and was noticed with unfortunate actions. At the EM 2020, his handball as the last man in connection with the red card sealed the end for the Netherlands in the round of 16.

The biggest catch: With additional payments, de Ligt should cost around 90 million euros. At least.

As a reminder: Bayern boss Kahn recently not only noticed a “landslide disproportion” in TV revenues in Europe’s top leagues and a corresponding unequal opportunity to the detriment of the Bundesliga. He also announced “smart and efficient action” by FC Bayern on the transfer market to compensate for these conditions.

How does that fit with de Ligt? Not at all. If you give Süle away for free and get a player at the same level for 90 million euros, you are acting unwisely and inefficiently. Measured against this, Kahn’s statements are absurd and downright ridiculous.
