Thomas Müller extended his current contract with FC Bayern until 2025 before the deadline in December. The club’s rockstar wants to stay in Munich, even if he is no longer irreplaceable in terms of sport.
Thomas Müller has been in the starting line-up for the German record champions seven times in the current Bundesliga season and has only scored one goal this season in the German top flight. Despite this meager balance sheet and the loss of a regular place, the German international quickly realized that he wanted to remain part of FC Bayern.
“I had a few physical problems from April to July. When the body no longer wants to, it becomes difficult. Then you have to think about it (about a possible end to your career, editor’s note). When I was pain-free again, I “I found the joy of being on the pitch every day again,” said Müller in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
The 34-year-old confirmed that his desire to remain active beyond the summer of 2024 and the upcoming European Championship at home developed quite quickly.
Müller is clear: “We want to become champions!”
Even the loss of a regular place at FC Bayern under head coach Thomas Tuchel has not dissuaded Müller from wanting to continue playing for Munich until 2025. “We are at the absolute top of the football food chain here at FC Bayern. There is no room for ‘he doesn’t take the coach’s decision well’ […] Coaches should be allowed to show a certain level of toughness towards their players. As a player, you have to be able to endure it, otherwise you won’t get far,” the offensive all-rounder has long since accepted his new role within the team.
Before the second half of the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen, which begins on Sunday (from 3:30 p.m.), Müller made it clear once again that winning his 13th German championship was the only option for him: “We have big goals and have everything in ourselves hand. Our focus is on our own game. We want to become champions,” said the veteran in the interview when asked about the title race with winter champions Bayer Leverkusen.
