FC Bayern: Malik Tillman on a possible future in Munich or Glasgow

Loan takes first stock

14 goals in 36 competitive games is the record of Bayern loan Malik Tillman at Glasgow Rangers. The 20-year-old midfielder, who attracted attention beyond the borders of Scotland last weekend with a controversial action, now drew a first summary of his loan and dares to look into the future.

“I started well, was able to gain experience in the Champions League and then dropped a bit in terms of performance. Now, under the new coach, I’m enjoying football more again, playing to my abilities, doing what I can. And try to help the team as best as possible,” said Tillmann in an interview with the “table football“. He moved to Glasgow in the summer “to play at the highest possible level and collect as many minutes as possible. It’s been working out quite well so far, so I’d say it was a good step.”

The Munich native, who made the leap to the pros in the summer of 2021 and played 102 Bundesliga minutes in a total of four games, was always aware that the perspective of regular playing time with the record champions was limited at the current point in his development. “It’s Bayern Munich, they can buy any player. You always toy with the idea that you might go on loan or even leave completely. I talked to the assistant coaches a lot, and they asked me right from the start what my goal was for this season. I also told them that I wanted to play. At a high level,” the right footer explained his loan change.

He followed Rangers more closely last year when they played their way to the Europa League final under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Tillman perceived the qualification for the European “premium class” and the fact that the club in Scotland was “the best team with Celtic” positively. “In addition, with the Scottish hardness I can bring another component into my game that I didn’t know before,” said the native of Nuremberg to the magazine.

Tillman on Bayern Council: “I was often given the example of Kimmich”

The move abroad did not pose any problems for him, and he was also well received by the club: “If you come from Bayern Munich and have trained regularly with the first team, you know that you can at least do something. But I also have to say that the team helped me a lot, that I was able to come in so early. Football has a lot to do with the mind. Of course, if you are happy with your own performance, your self-confidence will automatically increase.”

His trainer Julian Nagelsmann gave him some advice before he left for Scotland. It went towards mentality. “I was often given the example of Joshua Kimmich, that I can learn a lesson there. That I should always be one hundred percent on the pitch and attentive. And the balls are challenging because playing with the ball is one of my strengths. And the defense could be a bit better for an offensive player.” He was able to develop tactically under van Bronckhorst’s successor Michael Beale. When asked in which position he sees himself strongest, the youngster said: “I mostly play on the right eight, the coach gives me certain freedoms up front. I’m a mix of a ten and an eight. I took another big step towards the eighth position under the new coach because I think more defensively and understand our pressing.”

The question of the future remains. Tillman’s contract in Munich runs until 2024. Glasgow secured a purchase option as part of the loan deal, but a buyback option in favor of Bayern is also included in the working paper. Tillman was flexible with regard to the coming season: “I just want to play as much as possible. I don’t care, but I don’t really care where that will be. I feel comfortable here, very much so. I’m bringing in my performances, which I think they like quite well here at Rangers. But I could also imagine that Bayern really like it. Therefore … exit open.”
