FC Bayern Munich completely surprisingly dropped points in the women’s Bundesliga against second-to-last 1. FC Nürnberg. On Sunday (December 17, 2023), the defending champions only managed a 1-1 (0-1) draw in the Franconian-Bavarian duel.
This means that cup winners VfL Wolfsburg could overtake Werder Bremen with a win on Monday evening and spend Christmas at the top of the table.
After five league wins in a row, things seemed to be going well for the Bayern women in Nuremberg: Lea Schüller took the lead with a left-footed shot in the eleventh minute. However, the Munich team failed to make a decisive contribution; instead, central defender Glodis Perla Viggosdottir hit her opponent Vanessa Haim with her elbow in the penalty area.
Medina Desic (72nd) safely converted the penalty that was due, after which the favorite continued to storm the FCN goal furiously for a quarter of an hour. Giulia Gwinn (83′) and Jovana Damnjanovic (85′), who hit the post, missed great chances to win.
Hoffenheim beats Leipzig
Hoffenheim defeated Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig 2-1 (2-0) on Sunday (December 17, 2023). Defender Marta Cazalla scored the goals for the Sinsheimers (6th minute, 62nd) with a brace. Lydia Andrade scored the goal for Leipzig (82.)
Hoffenheim took control of the game. The Leipzig team tried to keep up, but ultimately they were too harmless to seriously embarrass TSG. The late goal didn’t change that.
Freiburg has no chance in Frankfurt
The Eintracht Frankfurt footballers defended third place in the table with a clear away win on Saturday. The Hessians won 4-0 (2-0) at SC Freiburg. Barbara Dunst (23rd) and an own goal from Alina Axtmann (41st) made things clear in the first 45 minutes. Lisanne Gräwe (66th) and Nicole Anyomi (70th) increased the final score.

SGS Essen wins in Cologne
SGS Essen had previously won 1-0 (1-0) at 1. FC Köln. The two teams had already met in the DFB Cup round of 16. The SGS also had the better end of the game on November 25th with a 4-3 win.
They made it clear in the early stages of the Bundesliga game at the Franz Kremer Stadium that the Cologne team wanted revenge for the cup defeat. The hosts restricted the guests from Essen deep in their half of the game. After a good 20 minutes, the SGS got into the game better and put more pressure on the Cologne team.
The Essen team’s offensive efforts were rewarded in the 27th minute: After an assist from Ramona Maier, left-back Lena Ostermeier hit the net with a precise left-foot shot from twelve meters. It was the only goal of the game. With which the Essner women celebrated their fifth win in their tenth Bundesliga game. Things are looking less good for Cologne, who were unsuccessful in their fifth competitive game in a row.
Bayer women end winless streak against Duisburg
On Friday, the Bayer 04 Leverkusen footballers secured an important win against MSV Duisburg and ended their winless streak in the Bundesliga. At the start of the tenth matchday, the Werkself defeated MSV Duisburg, bottom of the table, 4-1 (1-1).
Icelandic international Karolina Vilhjalmsdottir scored the opening goal in the fourth minute for the hosts, who had lost 3-0 to German champions Bayern Munich on Monday. There had previously been three draws in a row. Natalie Muth equalized before the break (38th), but Kristin Kögel (62nd), Nikola Karczewska (69th) and Verena Wieder (90th + 5th) shot Bayer to victory. Shortly before the end, Muth saw the yellow-red card (89th).
