It is no secret that FC Bayern wants to be active on the transfer market in the winter, and it is also no secret that high-profile new signings between the seasons are anything but easy to find. After the 1-1 draw in the friendly against FC Basel, sports director Christoph Freund and coach Thomas Tuchel have now given an insight into the German record champions’ plans.
Coach Thomas Tuchel has repeatedly demanded a six, a real “holding six” from the FC Bayern bosses, but the trainer now seems to have accepted the fact that the need is greater in other positions.
“If you look at today’s lineup, there is no shortage of central midfielders considering Konni [Konrad Laimer, d.Red.] still comes back and Leon [Goretzka, d.Red.] Played center back and Josh [Kimmich, d.Red.] is also a midfielder. We need someone who can help out as a right-back and who is flexible,” said Tuchel on “DAZN”.
However, life is simply not about expressing wishes. It’s about quality mixed with personality. We need characters who help us. It’s a difficult search and a difficult transfer window. But we’re working on it and we’ll see whether we can announce something,” Tuchel continued.
One player who embodies character and personality and is said to be at the center of Munich’s interest is Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier. The 29-year-old can play to his strengths in central defense, as a right-back and also in defensive midfield and therefore fits FC Bayern’s requirements profile perfectly.
FC Bayern are on the finishing line when it comes to transfers
So it’s no wonder that people on Säbener Straße don’t really want to get a statement about the status of the alleged poker.
He had also heard the rumors, explained Freund and added meaningfully: “I know the player, but I can’t say anything about it. We don’t get involved in speculation. The fact is that we are in contact with some players and are having discussions.”
Ultimately, the winter transfer window is always difficult terrain and no deadlines have been set. However, it is clear: “The sooner the better if we can conclude a deal. But it has to be right for all sides, that’s the most important thing.”
Despite all the market’s problems, it seems that people on Säbener Strasse are not just at the beginning of groundbreaking negotiations: “We are currently in the process of finalizing one or two names, one or two deals.”
Great transfer competition for FC Bayern
However, if Tuchel had his way, the deals would probably already have been finalized: “The schedule has already been exceeded. The wish was to have it completed by January 2nd. But we are relaxed, I am also relaxed because I know how difficult it is in winter,” said the 50-year-old, who contradicts his friend about a deadline, at least to some extent.
The Bayern duo, however, agree on why the situation is so complicated. Tuchel and his friend point to many big top clubs that have similar problems to solve as Munich’s. A circumstance that doesn’t exactly calm the market.
