At FC Bayern, the decision about Benjamin Pavard’s future has apparently been made after the end of the season.
Talks about a possible extension of the French defender’s contract, which expires in 2024, are planned after the last game of the season, reports “Sky” reporter Florian Plettenberg via Twitter.
The German record champions completed this on May 27th in the Bundesliga at 1. FC Köln. The Munich side have already been eliminated from both the DFB Cup and the Champions League.
According to Plettenberg, there are two options in the Pavard case: either the 27-year-old vice world champion extends his contract, or he is sold in the summer. Otherwise, FC Bayern would be threatened with a free transfer Pavard next year.
For the upcoming transfer period, the former Stuttgart player should have several other top options in addition to Bayern Munich. The Munich club management wants to extend his contract, but not at any price. It is a “difficult situation,” writes Plettenberg.
FC Bayern: back and forth with Benjamin Pavard
There has been a lot of speculation about Pavard’s future for weeks and months. For a long time there were signs of separation, also because the professional spoke publicly about a possible change several times around the World Cup in Qatar. Then an extension seemed just a matter of form. Now the whole thing ends in a hanging game.
The sticking point in the personnel could be the question of position. Pavard sees himself as a central defender, but was recently used by coach Thomas Tuchel at Bayern again exclusively on the right defensive side.
Should there be a departure after the scheduled talks, this should at least flush a decent fee into the coffers on Säbener Straße. Pavard’s market value is currently estimated at around 35 million euros.
