Last summer, Ryan Gravenberch switched from Ajax Amsterdam to FC Bayern for 18.5 million euros and signed until 2027. Less than ten months later, the 20-year-old Dutchman is already publicly saying goodbye in the Dutch media. But that wasn’t his last word.
Gravenberch has been allowed to play 26 times in his time with the German record champions under Julian Nagelsmann and new coach Thomas Tuchel, but the promising midfield talent was only four times in the starting XI. Not enough for the national player, who was only able to complete the full 90 minutes twice.
“So far it hasn’t gone as expected,” Gravenberch analyzed for the Dutch portal “Ajax Showtime”, but reassured: “It’s a shame for me, but I’m dealing with it well.”
In his career so far, he “never had a setback until this season,” but in Munich the development of the midfielder, who came from the Ajax youth team, now seems to be faltering. After all: Gravenberch is willing to “turn this experience into something positive”, he wants to “stay strong”, he emphasized.
“I would ideally like to be successful at Bayern,” said the 20-year-old, who has one goal and one assist so far, adding: “But if that doesn’t work and I don’t get a chance, then maybe I’ll have to look around.” A clear indication of a possible summer farewell.
Gravenberch still wants to keep calm. “At the moment I’m not thinking about it and I hope that I can change my situation at Bayern by training and playing well,” said the eleven-time Oranje kicker about the new situation under Thomas Tuchel.
The fact that he is struggling is ultimately a good thing. “As a player, you also get better through such experiences. I’m still very young and I’m glad that I’m experiencing something like this now and not later in my career,” said Gravenberch.
