In the quarter-finals of the Champions League, it became clear that Bayern’s squad is not filled well enough in all positions to defeat world-class teams like Manchester City. That’s why the record champions want to add more staff during the summer break – former Schalke coach Manuel Baum has some transfer tips ready for this.
Instead of celebrating the treble, FC Bayern will only be able to show the German championship as a season result at the end of the current season. And even that wobbles with just a two-point lead over pursuers Borussia Dortmund.
In order to find their way back to the usual dominance in the future, the Munich team want to sign one or the other top-class player in the summer. The storm center is currently the largest construction site.
Manuel Baum agrees. “To want to win titles, internationally or at an EM or World Cup, you need a nine,” explained the currently clubless coach, who was released in December 2020 after just a few months at FC Schalke, on the “BR24SportLive Extra” show.
At FC Bayern there is an imbalance on offense, the 43-year-old added: while there are many extremely strong players available on the flanks, a top scorer is missing in the middle.
FC Bayern: “Senior partner” for problem child Upamecano?
Baum also sees a need for action in defending the industry leader.
“Upamecano is someone who needs a senior partner next to him to take him with him. He’s extremely young and still makes too many mistakes out of passion, not because he doesn’t want to,” said the native of Landshut about Bavaria’s defense problem child, which Wednesday night against Manchester City (1-1) when Erling Haaland conceded again.
Baum defended the new FCB coach Thomas Tuchel, who only won two of his first six games.
“You have to manage the balancing act between day-to-day business, games in the Bundesliga and the development of the team. I hope they give him the time,” interjected the former trainer.
