FC Bayern: Ex-professional Luiz Gustavo signs with FC São Paulo

Former Bundesliga professional Luiz Gustavo is back in his Brazilian homeland. The 36-year-old midfielder, who was under contract with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia until the summer, has signed for São Paulo FC. The club officially announced on Monday that the left-footed player will join the club at the beginning of the new year and will be under contract until December 31, 2024.

“Next year we will all face a great challenge. My career has always been full of challenges and São Paulo will give me another one. I am happy and motivated to be part of this project. “I’m looking forward to my first contact with the fans in Morumbi,” said the midfielder.

For Gustavo, it is the first stop in Brazil since he moved from SC Corinthians Alagoano to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in 2007. Via FC Bayern, VfL Wolfsburg, Olympique Marseille and Fenerbahce, he landed at the club in the summer of 2022, which brought in Cristiano Ronaldo a short time later. Due to the foreigner regulations, he had to vacate the place at Al-Nassr for other well-known newcomers in the summer.

Now the move to São Paulo is coming up, where Gustavo will meet a former teammate, Rafinha. Between 2011 and 2013, the two appeared on the field together 37 times for FC Bayern, and in 2014 they made another appearance for the Brazilian national team. James Rodríguez is also under contract with the eleventh-placed team in the Série A.
