“For me he is very important – but people at the club seem to see it differently. The coach denied him a few months ago that he could play the six-man position,” said Hamann in an interview with the portal “web.de” critically.
Kimmich “played most of the games” in the defensive midfield, added the former national player, who now works as a TV expert for “Sky”.
Hamann continued: “The question is what Bayern plan to do with him. They don’t seem to be convinced of him in the six position, so a new player should come in the summer. Kimmich can certainly play one or two games as a right-back, but He hasn’t played that more or less his entire career.”
Kimmich’s ideal position has been discussed for years. The 28-year-old also commutes between the control center and the wing in the national team.
However, Hamann advises national coach Julian Nagelsmann against positioning Kimmich at the back right: “Letting a player play there who has only been used there sporadically over the last six or seven years would be too big of a risk for me.”
