After rumors circulated in the summer but were ultimately shattered, speculation about Eric Dier’s move from Tottenham Hotspur to FC Bayern recently flared up again. Now the deal is actually close to completion.
“I know the player, but I can’t say anything about it. We don’t get involved in speculation. The fact is that we are in contact with some players and are having discussions,” Bayern’s sports director Christoph Freund told “DAZN” last Saturday don’t look at your cards much. Specifically, the Munich sports director was confronted with the rumors about a purchase from Eric Dier, and now the Englishman has arrived in Munich.
As “Sky” reporter Florian Plettenberg learned exclusively, the deal is now about to be completed. Dier landed in Munich on Thursday to complete the medical check, reports Plettenberg on “X”.
But that’s not all: Plettenberg supports his post with a video that shows Dier arriving at the airport. Dier also confirms the deal. “FC Bayern is a fantastic club, fantastic,” said the defender, adding that he was really looking forward to playing for FC Bayern.
A little later, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel also stated at the press conference before the Bundesliga game against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim that they were about to sign Dier.
“He is in Munich and we are trying to sign him to get another option for central defense. Everything else I would like to wait until the agreement is finalized.” After all, we know from experience “that things can go wrong even at the last moment.”
The 29-year-old fits exactly the profile that the Munich team was urgently looking for during the winter break. The 49-time England international can exploit his strengths in central defense as well as on the right defensive wing and even in defensive midfield. Tuchel also pointed out that Dier could also help out as a left-back.
FC Bayern will probably have to pay a transfer fee
The course of the season so far has painfully confirmed that Bayern’s defense personnel are too thin. Since two players, Min-jae Kim and Noussair Mazraoui, are at the Asian Cup and Africa Cup in January, they definitely wanted to add more.
Since Dier’s contract in London would not have expired until the summer, a transfer fee will probably go to Spurs. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the sum is around four million euros.
