Thomas Tuchel and the TV experts on German television: This relationship is currently being put to a tough test. After FC Bayern’s head coach recently had a public dispute with former national players and current “Sky” experts Lothar Matthäus and Dietmar Hamann, the next broadside is now coming against the coach of the German champions: ex-BVB captain Roman Weidenfeller, who once played for Borussia Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel, spoke about the football teacher.
In the “Sky” program “Triple”, the long-time Dortmund goalkeeper spoke about his former head coach, under whom he only played eight Bundesliga games for two seasons between 2015 and 2017 as number two behind Roman Bürki.
“I believe that Thomas Tuchel is not capable of criticism, that he is not receptive to it and that he always reacts very sensitively. You experienced that in Dortmund. You experienced that when players didn’t agree with him – like Nuri Sahin, who of course also understands the game and presented him with a different idea,” said Weidenfeller about his former boss, who won the 2017 DFB Cup with Borussia Dortmund.
In the cup final against Eintracht Frankfurt, Thomas Tuchel caused great internal discontent when he didn’t even name home-grown midfielder Nuri Sahin in the squad for the final.
BVB with Tuchel came second once and third once
Weidenfeller named another example in which there were disagreements between the then BVB head coach and the Dortmund club bosses: “Even when the club suggested signing Mario Götze. But he really wanted André Schürrle. There has always been that Friction. I think afterwards it’s important that in the end you speak one language and show your colors on site.”
In his two years at BVB, Thomas Tuchel was runner-up once and third in the table once.
