In the last game of the Champions League group phase, FC Bayern made amends for the recent Bundesliga defeat in Frankfurt. After the 1-0 win at Manchester United, coach Thomas Tuchel was already looking forward again.
“It was fun,” enthused the German record champions’ trainer on “Prime Video” late Tuesday evening.
The 50-year-old liked the reaction to the 1:5 loss against Eintracht Frankfurt. “That was at the highest level of team level. It was our best game in the group stage,” said Tuchel, who praised energy and concentration.
“Now we have fulfilled our duty,” said the Munich coach after the confident group phase with five wins and one draw.
In the round of 16 draw next Monday, FC Bayern will be in the group winners’ pot. This means he will face a group runner-up and will play the second leg in the Allianz Arena at home.
“Sure, we definitely want to get to the quarter-finals,” announced Tuchel. After that, with a bit of luck, everything is possible in the Champions League.
FC Bayern last triumphed in 2020
FC Bayern last won the most important club competition in 2020. Three years ago they defeated Paris Saint-Germain, then coached by Tuchel, 1-0 at the final tournament in Lisbon. The golden goal was scored by Kingsley Coman, who was also the Munich match winner in Manchester.
Since then, the German industry leader has failed in the quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain (20/21), Villarreal FC (21/22) and Manchester City (22/23).
The pressure to go far in the premier class has recently increased for FC Bayern: the star ensemble has already been eliminated from the DFB Cup, and Harry Kane and Co. are currently only in second place in the Bundesliga.
