Eric Dier is officially a FC Bayern player. After the 29-year-old central defender was filmed on the way to the medical check on Thursday morning, the Munich team has now confirmed the signing from Tottenham Hotspur. The 49-time England international follows top striker Harry Kane (30) six months late – Dier has not been on the field with any other professional more often.

According to the English, Dier is moving to Munich on loan until the end of the season, but with the option of a permanent commitment for another year. The contract with Tottenham expires at the end of the season. Reports differ when it comes to the transfer fee that is now due. Initially it was written that Dier would cost around 4 million euros. Later reported “Sky“that no money is due initially. Accordingly, Bayern pays for games and services after a certain period of time. In the end, the total amount should not exceed 3 million to 3.5 million euros.

The market value of the 1.88 meter tall right-footer is 12 million euros, after it collapsed by more than half over the last year. Dier moved from his training club Sporting Lisbon to London in 2014 for 5 million euros. In nine years he played 364 competitive games for the “Spurs” and contributed 25 goals. He was used for the past two seasons, but he no longer plays a role in new coach Ange Postecoglou’s plans and only made four appearances this season.

“We are happy that we were able to sign Eric Dier. He has played a role in our considerations for this transfer period for a long time. Eric will be a valuable part of our defense. His sporting abilities and his international experience will help the team both on the pitch and in the dressing room,” said FCB sporting director Christoph Freund, commenting on the commitment. Dier said: “This move is a dream come true for me, because even as a child you want to play for clubs like FC Bayern one day. FC Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world and has an incredible history. I want to help the team with my versatility in defense and I’m really looking forward to my new colleagues – and to the fans in the Allianz Arena, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world.”

TM expert explains Dier’s bargain transfer from Tottenham to FC Bayern

Stefan Bienkowski, Lead of Content UK at Transfermarkt, explains: “Eric Dier undoubtedly has great merit at Tottenham with so many years and games under his belt, but it was clear that the club and the player would be ready to part ways this month. Ange Postecoglou needs faster and more specialized defenders for his high-intensity tactics and the new basic order with a high defensive line. That’s why Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven was signed in the summer, and now Radu Drăgușin will join them – both are much faster than Dier. The England international’s contract expired at the end of the season, so Bayern were able to sign a variable player for little money, while Spurs let go of a player who was no longer part of their plans.

Bayern had also shown interest in Drăgușin (21), but the Romanian from Genoa CFC had already given his word to Tottenham at this point. His advisor confirmed this on Wednesday and gave details of the Munich-based company’s offer. Coach Thomas Tuchel, who looked after Chelsea FC for around a year and a half, knows Dier very well from the Premier League. For the 50-year-old, an improvement in defense was essential; FC Bayern’s bottleneck was solved at the latest by the international release of the South Korean Min-jae Kim (27) for the Asian Cup in Qatar, which runs until February 10th, and the Moroccan full-back Noussair Mazraoui (26) for the Africa Cup (January 13th to February 11th; Ivory Coast). A player who can also be used on the right in the back four is still to come. The favorite is ex-Leipziger Nordi Mukiele (26) from PSG.
