Both FC Bayern, after a desolate performance in Mainz, and BVB, in the derby against Bochum, suffered painful defeats on the 32nd Bundesliga matchday. The coaches were anything but happy afterwards. The voices.
Sebastian Hoeness (TSG Hoffenheim coach): “I’ve seen a lot of good things. I’ve seen courage and passion. But when you concede four goals it becomes difficult to score. The 2-2 was the turning point. It’s extremely bitter and it hurts.”
Christian Streich (Coach SC Freiburg): “Hoffenheim surprised with the back four. They played very well at the beginning. But our boys stayed calm. The team impressed me with their mentality.”
Bo Svensson (FSV Mainz 05 coach): “Of course that was a very, very good performance. We then deservedly lead 2-0. It’s clear that Bayern always have the quality to score a goal. In the second half we had to get through a tricky phase. Then we score the right one Timing the 3-1, that was maybe the key. A very deserved win.”
Julian Nagelsmann (Bayern Munich coach): “There are too many defeats, too many in the same way. I think we always need a certain basic passion in the game. We didn’t have that today. Not going to the extreme in every situation is a bit human after the tenth title in a row. But we still have the logo on our chest.”
Marco Rose (Borussia Dortmund coach): “We’re super disappointed. We reacted well after falling behind. I actually had a good feeling today, but we didn’t score the fourth goal. When I look at the table and see 50 goals conceded, it’s clear what the core issue is is.”
Thomas Reis (coach VfL Bochum): “It was pure emotion. We made the whole of Bochum proud. We achieved great things this season. Let’s see what the night brings.”
Marco Kostmann (Arminia Bielefeld coach): “We knew it was going to be tough and we had to be patient. We tried to find our gaps by controlling the ball and passing. The goal conceded after a set piece was very annoying despite a clear assignment. After that the team reared up again and with all their might tries to get at least one point. The crowd has taken us to this point. I’m very happy with the commitment and what we’ve set out to do.”
Felix Magath (Hertha BSC coach): “We saw a typical relegation duel, a fighting game from start to finish. We controlled it well for long stretches, Arminia hardly had any chances. We were able to keep our penalty area clean for the most part, but we came under real pressure in the last few minutes . The crowd pushes the team forward and with great enthusiasm and commitment Arminia got a fair final result. I’m happy with our performance. Now there are two more games left.”
Markus Weinzierl (FC Augsburg coach): “It was our game for the first twelve minutes. The double whammy broke our necks. We didn’t find our way back into the game, you could see Cologne’s class. We wanted to stay in the league on our own and celebrate. That’s what we did didn’t make it, so I’m disappointed. But we’ll make it.”
Steffen Baumgart (Coach 1. FC Cologne): “That was a very, very good performance by my team. It went well for us. I’ve rarely seen my team be so consistent. That was a deserved win. We have self-confidence, a lot is going well at the moment.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo (VfB Stuttgart coach): “We had to develop courage and determination over the course of the game, there were several weaknesses. But we got better, even with the changes. The equalizer was deserved. Just one point, it hurts a bit, but we keep going and try to attack in Munich.”
Florian Kohfeldt (coach VfL Wolfsburg): “If someone had said at the beginning of the season that we would be able to stay in the league on the third to last day, nobody in Wolfsburg would have been satisfied – and overall it wasn’t satisfactory either. But that’s an achievement that I don’t downplay, we were all very tense in the last few weeks and fly home with a good feeling.”
Urs Fischer (Coach Union Berlin): “In the first half, Fürth was clearly the better team. Nothing went right for us. The second half was how we imagined it would be. We were lucky that we only went into the break 0-1. It wasn’t undeserved because of the second half. If we don’t play at the limit for 90 minutes, it will be difficult.”
Stefan Leitl (coach SpVgg Greuther Furth): “Basically, I’m happy with the way the team performed after relegation. We managed to keep the excitement high. We were looking forward to this away game. We had good control and good chances before we took the lead. Overall, I’m very pleased to have scored against a strong team.”
