Florian Wirtz was once considered a hot candidate at FC Bayern, but recently things have been remarkably quiet around the Bayer Leverkusen superstar. The fact that the German national player is not an issue in Munich this summer is probably due to a decision by the youngster that is said to have caused displeasure on Säbener Straße.
Being part of the DFB squad seems to have played an extraordinarily important role for Florian Wirtz early on in his career. Although the 20-year-old was one of the biggest disappointments in national coach Hansi Flick’s team at the most recent international matches in June, there are still great hopes in the German camp for the offensive man.
In order not to risk his status in the year before the home EM, Wirtz should “absolutely” want to stay with his current employer Bayer Leverkusen, reports “Bild” football boss Christian Falk in his podcast “Bayern Insider”. At the Werkself he calculates “higher starting eleven chances”.
That’s one of the reasons why FC Bayern’s interest has cooled off a little recently, although the record champions have “repeatedly tried hard” for the noble technician.
FC Bayern “a bit upset” about Wirtz
Wirtz only celebrated his comeback in the last back series, previously a cruciate ligament rupture in March 2022 had put him out of action for around nine months.
In the middle of the rehabilitation phase, the shooting star prematurely extended his contract in Leverkusen, which would have been valid until 2026 anyway, for another year.
A vote of confidence from Bayer, which is said not to have gone down well with FC Bayern. There they were “a bit annoyed” that Wirtz signed “without need” until 2027, according to Falk, after all it had become much more expensive as a result.
Nevertheless, in Munich one should think about a transfer of the winner of the Fritz Walter medal in gold. At the latest next summer it will be “hot, then Bayern will certainly have a say in the matter,” announced Tobias Altschäffl from “Sport Bild”.
