FC Bayern Munich is the first club to win a six-game preliminary round for the third time in the Champions League. In the history of the “premier class” since the 1992/93 season, only seven other teams have achieved the maximum yield, as a look at the TM database shows. In the current season, apart from the Munich team, no other club can boast this record.

However, the perfect group stage is not a guarantee of further success: Of the other teams that did, apart from title winners Bayern in 2020, only AC Milan 1992/93 and Liverpool FC 2021/22 made it into the final. In the history of the competition, several teams in the group remained flawless only in the past season, when Bayern and Liverpool also Ajax Amsterdam managed this feat.
“We also played a very good group phase last year and then we didn’t have such a good knockout round. So we have to take a few steps differently than last year,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann when asked about the 18-point group phase. But he was “in good spirits that we can transport the spirit that prevails in the group into the new year.”
