Once cost 16 million
Ex-Leipziger Jean-Kévin Augustin (25) has found a new club: FC Basel has signed the French striker until 2025. After three more or less lost years at AS Monaco, Leeds United and FC Nantes, Augustin is particularly looking forward to his new coach Alex Frei.
“I had a lot of good talks with the club and especially with the head coach. Alex Frei explained to me how he wants to work with me and gave me a plan. I have a very good feeling, also thanks to the talks with him. He was a great striker and I’m looking forward to working with him and learning from him,” said Augustin about Frei, who, after stints at FC Wil 1900 and FC Winterthur, will be working as head coach for Basel for the first time.

In recent years, Augustin has made less sporting, but rather legal headlines that he was not responsible for. There was a dispute between RB Leipzig and Leeds United over a EUR 21 million fee that the English did not want to pay – the Saxons are still waiting for the money despite FIFA’s decision in favor of RB. The move to Basel is on a free transfer as his contract with Nantes ends this summer.
Frei about Augustin: “I’m really happy that Jean-Kévin is with us. He has incredible qualities and huge potential. Our task will now be to bring him back to the level he was and belongs to.” He was at this level especially in 2017/18 after his 16 million transfer from PSG to Leipzig – at that time he collected in 18 points in 36 appearances for RB in his debut season.

“He knows the expectations of the coaching staff and what it means to play for this club. And he also knows that we still have a lot of work ahead of us that we will tackle together,” says Frei.
