Only one in Europe before him
Last summer, DFB junior Adriano Onyegbule dared to take RB Leipzig’s early move abroad. At FC Basel 1893, the 16-year-old attacking talent wanted to make the leap to the pros – after an injury and twelve games for the U21s, the plan worked last weekend. Onyegbule made his debut on the 33rd match day of the Super League and became the second youngest German first division player in Europe this season.
TSG dominates: youngest German first division professionals in Europe 2022/23
Between the semi-finals in the Conference League, FCB coach Heiko Vogel relied on a few talents – Marvin Akahomen, just 15 years old, started in the center of defense – and the second youngest starting eleven in the 2022/23 Super League season at 23.7 years. That of the “SRFThe project entitled “Basler Jugend forscht” went down 1:6 against FC St. Gallen in 1879, but Onyegbule was allowed to replace captain Fabian Frei in the 60th minute – at the age of 16 years, ten months and 21 days. Only one German was younger this season.
The ranking is led by Bayern talent Paul Wanner, who was only a day younger than Onyegbule when he made his first Bundesliga appearance of the current season. The top 20 is naturally dominated by Bundesliga professionals and by TSG Hoffenheim, who are represented four times with Tom Bischof, Joshua Quarshie, Muhammed Damar and Umut Tohumcu. In addition to Onyegbule, there are two other youngsters from abroad who come from the Hertha academy: Anton Kade, who like Onyegbule now wears the Basel jersey, and Eric Preljevic, who plays for Union Titus Petingen in Luxembourg.
