“Outstanding Commitment”
Now it’s official: Philippe Coutinho is leaving FC Barcelona four and a half years after his 135 million euro transfer from Liverpool FC. As the Catalans announced on Thursday evening, the 29-year-old offensive player is moving to Aston Villa. According to the Catalans, the transfer fee is 20 million euros – well below the originally agreed purchase option of 40 million euros. In addition, Barcelona have secured a resale participation of 50 percent for the future.
Coutinho has signed a contract with the Villans until 2026. “This is an excellent signing for Aston Villa. Phil is a model professional and has fitted in very well with the team since joining in January,” said coach Steven Gerrard, who had played with the professional at Liverpool and was adamant about his signing. “With his behavior on and off the field, he is also a valuable role model for our younger players, who can only benefit from his experience.”
With Suárez, Ronaldo & Coutinho.: Players with the highest transfer earnings
As recently as mid-March, Gerrard said the deal would be “more complicated than people think.” At Barcelona, Brazil international Coutinho, whose contract expired in 2023, raked in up to £480,000 (around €570,000) a week. He made 16 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring four goals and providing three assists. It is said that FC Barcelona saves a total of 7 million euros by his early departure. Money that could help the financially struggling club to recruit Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski (33), who is willing to change.
