FC Barcelona: Ter Stegen “ready for the next step” in the DFB team

Competition with Neuer

In just over four weeks, the German national team will also start the year 2023 with friendly matches against Belgium and Peru after the disappointing end of the World Cup last December. In all likelihood, Marc-André ter Stegen will be in goal for the injured Manuel Neuer. The 30-year-old keeper, who is on the way to his fifth championship with FC Barcelona in the Spanish LaLiga, now commented on the competition with the Munich player and formulated the clear goal of being Germany’s number one at the 2024 European Championship.

“I believe that my performances in recent years have been right and that I have matured in the national team and am ready for the next step. Of course it’s my aim to be number one: at Barca, but also in the national team. And I will do everything I can to show my maximum performance in the position I am in now and to help the team,” Ter Stegen told the magazine in an interview.table football“. To date, the Mönchengladbach native has played 30 international matches since his debut in May 2012 – half of which, however, were friendlies. Apart from the 2017 Confederations Cup, when Ter Stegen played four out of five games and Germany clinched the title, in the big tournaments between 2016 and 2022 there was only one place on the bench for the Barça catcher, whom his coach Xavi recently described as one of the best keeper in the world.

Although according to ter Stegen there have been no talks with national coach Hansi Flick and goalkeeper coach Andreas Kronenberg about the future after the World Cup and Neuer’s injury, the goalkeeper, who is looked after by the “Roof” agency, was confident of achieving his clear goal of the 2024 European Championship able: “I also want to be an important player in the national team. That’s why it’s important for me now that I play a lot at Barcelona and in the national team and do my best. (…) We will meet in March before the next international matches, process the World Cup and analyze the situation. The coach will then make the decisions he needs to make. I also believe that he will implement his new ideas very consistently and that there will be some personnel changes.”
