7. Clean slate in LaLiga
FC Barcelona are top of the table in the Clásico against Real Madrid. The Catalans claimed first place in LaLiga on Sunday evening by beating Celta Vigo 1-0 (1-0). The meager offensive performance against the eleventh in the table drew even more focus on goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who in the eighth league game did not concede a goal for the seventh time and is now approaching the club’s best white vests in a row.
Pedri (17th) scored the only goal of the game. In the final phase, the hosts saved the victory with luck and ter Stegen. The German national goalkeeper ruined some of the guests’ chances. Celta were unlucky when the ball hit the post after a deflected shot by Iago Aspas. Barcelona and Real are at the top of the table with 22 points each.
For Ter Stegen, who only caught a single goal in the 4-1 win at San Sebastián on Matchday 2, it was the sixth clean sheet in the league. Barça’s record in this respect is eight games in a row, the last time Claudio Bravo did between August and October 2014 with Ter Stegen on the bench. In LaLiga history, only one team or keeper has had a longer streak: Abel Resino kept a total of 13 consecutive clean sheets in the league from December 1990 to March 1991 in the Atlético Madrid goal. For Ter Stegen, including the Champions League, there are now eight games in a row to zero. A bad omen before the approaching Clásico on Sunday: Bravo’s series ended in the ninth game against Real Madrid.
