The time has finally come: FC Barcelona is returning “home” after a delay. The renovation of Spain’s largest stadium is still not completed.

Two and a half years after the last game at Camp Nou, FC Barcelona returns to its home stadium. On Saturday, coach Hansi Flick’s team will face Athletic Bilbao. Kick-off is at 4:15 p.m. “We are returning home,” Barça wrote on social networks.

The return to the modernized stadium was originally planned for November 2024, but was postponed several times. The city of Barcelona has now given the green light: around 45,000 spectators are allowed to watch the game against Bilbao. Work on the upper tier is continuing, and the new stadium roof is not yet finished. A capacity of 62,000 places is expected by the end of the year. Once construction is completed, Camp Nou will be able to accommodate 105,000 fans.

A football match was last played there in May 2023. The extensive renovation work then began, which was delayed several times. This meant a huge loss of income for the club. The modernization costs allegedly amount to around 1.5 billion euros. Until their return, the reigning champions played in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.

On November 7th, Robert Lewandowski & Co. trained in front of 21,795 spectators at the Camp Nou. The club hopes to be able to play Champions League games in its own stadium again in the future. A decision from UEFA is still pending – a change of stadium during the current European Cup season is generally not permitted.
