FC Barcelona: Marc-André ter Stegen with a clean sheet in LaLiga

Historic season with Barça

For Marc-André ter Stegen, the ninth season in the FC Barcelona shirt will be historic. The newly crowned champions kept the DFB goalkeeper between the posts on matchday 37 in the 3-0 win against RCD Mallorca for the 26th time this season – ter Stegen equaled Francisco Liaño’s LaLiga record (58) from the season 1993/94 for Deportivo La Coruna. The 31-year-old even has the chance to replace Liaño as the sole record holder at Celta Vigo with another clean record next Sunday.

Ter Stegen has also set a record in the 21st century when comparing the top 5 leagues. So far, Petr Cech (40) and Jan Oblak (30) have been at the top of the rankings, each without conceding 24 times in one season. Cech did that in his debut season at Chelsea in 2004/05, playing three fewer games than Oblak did at Atlético Madrid in 2015/16, who didn’t miss a game then.

The strong defense and goalkeeper Ter Stegen are one of the important pillars for the 27th league title of the Catalans. Barça have conceded just 18 goals in 37 games. “If you look at the numbers, this season is exceptional and historic. I felt really good all season and was in good shape, but I’m also happy for my teammates. It is not the work of one individual, but of many. Reaching those numbers makes me very proud to play for a club like Barça,” said Ter Stegen (quoted via “mark“).

“It’s crazy to have 26 clean sheets. I’m very happy that I achieved that because it was very difficult. In the last few games we suffered a lot on defense, but in the end we got the title. Now it’s about beating him, as a team. When you are there, you have to attack. It’s not my job, it’s the whole team’s,” added Ter Stegen, who admitted to being “calmer” ahead of the clash at Celta Vigo, having already equalized the LaLiga record.
