FC Barcelona is threatened with exclusion from the premier class

The heavily indebted Catalans are threatened with sanctions from UEFA because of dubious financial practices. The exclusion from the premier class could even extend over several seasons.

FC Barcelona reportedly has to fear exclusion from the Champions League from the 2024/2025 season. This is reported by “Welt am Sonntag” and refers to circles from UEFA and the traditional Spanish club. The reason is therefore violations of UEFA’s financial regulations. When asked by the Sports Information Service, she did not want to comment on the topic.

Clubs are obliged to offset expenses incurred with corresponding income. The most recent three-year cycle is always evaluated; the only decisive factor is sales that can be directly attributed to the football business.

UEFA: Barcelona’s finances are a “mess”

Barça announced a net profit of 304 million euros in September. The highly indebted club’s most recent annual report also reported income amounting to hundreds of millions of euros, for example from the sale of future TV and marketing rights as well as from other sports.

Behind the scenes at UEFA, the club’s balance sheets are described as “chaos”, according to the paper, which says there is talk of a Champions League ban “for two to three years”. Welt am Sonntag quotes an unnamed source: “The higher the loss, the higher the punishment.”

FC Barcelona, the team of German national players Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ilkay Gündogan, is currently in third place in the Spanish league. The club is in the round of 16 in the Champions League and will face SSC Napoli.
