The ailing FC Barcelona has to accept another financial setback. Because of incorrect tax returns from 2012 to 2015, the Spanish top club has to pay a total of almost 23 million euros, as the State Court announced on Friday in Madrid. It was said that these were back payments and fines in connection with remuneration for consultants and players’ agents in these years. The State Court of Justice rejected an objection by the Catalans against a ruling by the Central Economic Administrative Court from 2020.

Meanwhile, the club announced that it would lodge another appeal, this time before the Spanish Supreme Court. Barça expressed “astonishment” that “the State Court of Justice did not take into account the recent jurisprudence of the Supreme Court on this issue, from which other football clubs have benefited in recent rulings on the same issue,” the club said. The new judgment does not result in any payment obligation for the time being.
The traditional club from northeastern Spain, where German national players Marc-André ter Stegen (31) and Ilkay Gündogan (33) are under contract, has, according to the latest information, debts amounting to around 4 billion euros.
