FC Barcelona extends with Sergi Roberto – With record players ahead of the top 25

Salary & clause reduced

FC Barcelona has extended the expiring contract with homegrown Sergi Roberto by another year. As the Catalans have announced, the 30-year-old all-rounder, who has been at the club since 2006, is now tied until 2023. The eleven-time Spanish international was recently linked with a move to Atlético Madrid. For his stay at Barça, Roberto is said to be willing to take a significant drop in salary, reportedly by 60 percent. The exit clause will also be reduced from the previous €500 million, but is still very high at €400 million.

Barça’s professional squad has included Roberto, who mostly plays in central midfield or at right-back, since 2013. Since then, the native Catalan has played 316 competitive games, only 26 professionals are in front of him in the club’s history. With 14 more games, he would catch up with Antoni Ramallets in 24th place, who should have been surpassed by Marc-André ter Stegen (324 games) earlier. Due to injury, Roberto only made twelve appearances last season. Among other things, he was out with a severe thigh injury from late November to late April. Its market value, which peaked at EUR 60 million in spring 2018, recently fell to EUR 6 million.
