Before anniversary at FCA
The past summer theater at FC Augsburg also left its mark on sports director Stefan Reuter. “It was a very surprising end to the season and a difficult time for FCA. It was perhaps the most intense time in the ten years because the unity that had always distinguished FCA was not felt in this phase,” said the 1990 world champion of the “Augsburg General‘ on the occasion of his tenth anniversary with the Fuggerstadt residents.
Last May, first President Klaus Hofmann and a day later coach Markus Weinzierl resigned from their posts. Discrepancies with Reuter had also been reported. According to the 56-year-old, FCA have learned their lessons from the turbulence. “A lot of things were questioned after an analysis and the course was set for us to play the intensive football that FCA always stood for,” said Reuter.
Having engaged Weinzierl as a coach a second time after his noisy farewell in 2016 was not a mistake in retrospect, explained Reuter: “No, because we had cleared everything up and had a good basis for his second term. In the end we kept the class with him.” With 1,460 days during his first station, Weinzierl, who led the club into the Europa League, is the head coach with the second longest tenure at Augsburg.
Under Reuter, the club has changed coaches six times since it started on January 1, 2013. Reuter signed Enrico Maaßen as Weinzierl’s successor in the summer, who has scored an average of 1.06 points from 17 games so far. In terms of transfers, Reuter posted a minus of 48.96 million euros. In the last ten years he has taken players for a total of €151.26m, while professionals have left FCA for €102.3m. The most expensive purchase was Ricardo Pepi, also the club’s record signing of €16.36m, while the most expensive sale was Abdul-Rahman Baba, who went to Chelsea for €26m in 2015/16.
