FC Augsburg: Reuter wants to exercise a purchase option for Berisha “in good time”.

FCA plans firmly with Pepi

It’s not often that German national players are loaned out – but at the moment there are two: Kevin Schade (21), SC Freiburg’s own child, plays for FC Brentford, who can sign the winger for 25 million euros. And Mergim Berisha (24) is chasing goals for FC Augsburg. In order to sign the centre-forward from Fenerbahce Istanbul, only 4 million euros are necessary.

The FCA has still not exercised this purchase option. “But we will do it in time,” confirmed manager Stefan Reuter to the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. Berisha earned his DFB debut under national coach Hansi Flick with nine goals in 20 games and doubled his market value to €12m in the latest Bundesliga update. In the TM forum, the comparatively low purchase option is referred to as a “no brainer”.

After the record transfer of Ricardo Pepi (20), who came from FC Dallas for around 16 million euros in January 2022, has hardly borne fruit to date, Reuter landed a direct hit with Berisha. Pepi is on loan for FC Groningen this season and is said to have aroused the interest of leaders Feyenoord Rotterdam – according to information from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a return to southern Germany is unlikely.

Whether both Pepi and Berisha, just one or neither of the two strikers will play for FCA in 2023/24 is still in the stars.

Reuter is aware that the German international’s time at FCA could soon be over. “It’s always the same with us: If something extraordinary comes up and the player wants to take the next step, we’ll deal with it,” said the ex-professional, who has been in charge of Augsburg since 2013.

FCA coach Enrico Maassen, who put Berisha in the best form of his career, would also welcome Pepi as an option. According to Reuter, he rates the US striker “extremely positively”. Maassen, who likes to play in a 3-4-1-2 formation with two strikers, would have a luxury problem in the coming season if Reuter activates the purchase option for Berisha. In addition to Berisha and Pepi, the 39-year-old coach also has Ermedin Demirovic (25), Dion Beljo (21) and Irvin Cardona (25) available.
