FC Augsburg: Mergim Berisha is planning the next step in his career for the summer

Fenerbahce loan

Attacker Mergim Berisha is still officially a player for the Turkish first division club Fenerbahce. Those responsible for the club have repeatedly announced that FC Augsburg will soon be making use of the purchase option of four million euros anchored in the 25-year-old’s loan agreement. Irrespective of this, the ways of the Fuggerstadt and the two-time national player could separate again in the summer, reports the “Kicker”.

Coach Enrico Maaßen’s team is 13th in the table with a six-point lead over a relegation zone three games before the end of the season. Because a loss is expected for the 2022/23 financial year – the Bundesliga club also spent more on the transfer market in the current season than it earned – the focus would also be on potential sales revenues. Against this background, the sporting management of the Bundesliga club is also open to selling Berisha in the summer at a significant profit, writes the magazine.

The club is hoping for a sum of up to 20 million euros. The latter is above the current market value of the striker, who had almost tripled it since September 2021 given his record of 13 goals in 21 games and his debut in the DFB-Elf. Only once in the history of the club did a transfer earn more (to the overview of Augsburg’s record departures).

FC Augsburg: Bundesliga club doesn’t want to put any obstacles in Berisha’s way

“We want to take the next step together with Mergim,” said Maassen about four weeks ago, with a view to the attacker’s future. However, it is questionable whether the player himself would like to do this at FCA beyond the summer. According to the “Kicker”, Berisha is “definitely” planning the next step in her career. With his achievements, the native of Berchtesgaden has aroused the desires of other clubs. If a corresponding offer arrives in Augsburg after the end of the season and the above-mentioned requirements are more or less fulfilled, the club does not want to put any obstacles in the player’s way, it is said.

In addition to the currently undoubtedly “hottest iron” of the Fuggerstadt team, the ailing left-back Iago (26, contract until 2024) and the record transfer Ricardo Pepi (20, contract until 2026), who is currently on loan to Groningen, are also potential sales candidates.

The latter is one of the absolute top scorers at the Eredivisie club with 15 goals in 26 games and was anything but open to a return to FCA in April. “It’s clear to me: I don’t want to go back to Augsburg. I have already informed the club about this. I was promised things that were not kept. Then it’s very simple: Then you have to look for another club,” said Pepi in an interview with “Voetbal International”. “The thing is clear to me: because of the way they treated me, a return to Augsburg is not an option.”
