The search for the successor to the dismissed coach Enrico Maaßen has begun at the ailing Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.
“We have created a clear requirements profile and have now made initial contacts,” said sports director Marinko Jurendic in a media round on Tuesday: “There is no exclusion criterion, we are considering all possibilities. It’s not about names, but about content.”
The Swabians do not put themselves under pressure in terms of time. “We don’t want to find the quickest solution, but rather the best solution. The finding process depends on various elements, but we also want to give our new head coach the necessary lead time,” said Jurendic.
On a personal level, the 45-year-old sports director did not find it easy to separate from Maaßen. “When a coach is fired, it’s always about the human component. ‘Enno’ has put in a lot of effort in the last 15 months and pushed forward some changes in the squad,” said Jurendic: “It always hurts to separate, but as a club we are “We are obliged to make decisions.”
Maaßen moved from Borussia Dortmund II to the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2022. Under the young coach, FCA only achieved two wins from the last 19 competitive games. In the Bundesliga, the club recently fell to 15th place due to a home defeat against newly promoted Darmstadt 98.
