FC Augsburg: Koubek on ejection – “Clubs asked what was going on”

Gikiewicz replacement with self-promotion

Against VfB Stuttgart (1:2) it was again Tomas Koubek who kept FC Augsburg in the game for a long time. The substitute for first-choice goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz (35), who has to take a break because of a horse kiss, has not yet been able to celebrate a win in his five games this season, but after two seasons without playing he is doing self-promotion. “Other people have to say whether I was good,” said Koubek (quoted via “table football“) after the game with the Swabians, who made no secret of the fact that he was happy to finally be able to prove his skills again.

“You can train however you want, but you see the situation in the game once and have to decide in a second,” Koubek continued. The Czech, who signed for 7.5 million euros from Stade Rennes as number one in 2019, was unable to meet the expectations of those responsible at the time and moved into the second, and at the beginning of the current season even into the third link. The search for a buyer for the goalkeeper who had been booted out last summer was unsuccessful.

“The problem in August was that I hadn’t played for two years,” Koubek confirmed. “Clubs asked what was going on. I wasn’t locked somewhere in the basement, I was training all the time.” But that wasn’t enough. Somewhat surprisingly, after Gikiewicz’s absence, Koubek was given preference over Daniel Klein (21), who previously always sat on the bench as a substitute. “During the week we told both keepers that they could play. The last impression was that Tomas did it, and he did a great job,” said coach Enrico Maaßen, explaining the choice at the time.

Koubek would prefer to “stay and play” at FC Augsburg

As soon as Gikiewicz is able to play after suffering a bruise in his thigh, Koubek also assumes that he will have to clear the space between the posts. “We only got two points from five games, so I could understand it,” summed up the 30-year-old. “But I think I did a good job in these five games and gave everything I had.” Koubek’s contract runs until 2024 and he’s not pushing for a departure.

“I would like to stay and play in Augsburg,” he said. That might be difficult in competition with Gikiewicz, but the eleven-time national player made it clear: “After the five games I have motivation again and the feeling that I can do it.”
