According to reports, a two-year contract for Herrlich was in the air, he would have succeeded the Portuguese Jesualdo Ferreira, who had to leave the post at the end of March after only nine games. Reigning champions Zamalek are currently only sixth after 21 league games, 14 points behind leaders El Ahly. For Herrlich, who coached Bayer Leverkusen in addition to FCA between 2017 and 2018 in the Bundesliga, Zamalek would have been the first stop abroad.
